Little Mermaid: Sea by Razulude Little Mermaid: Sea by Razulude
This was done for my illustration class. Our assignment was to create an illustration that could be sold as merchandise. Some people made brooches or painted on skateboards. One girl even painted a whole nightstand.
I made this pattern illustrating the original tale of the Little Mermaid. It will be printed on fabric and then sewn into a backpack. It's cool because I could potentially do a whole series of patterns on original fairy tales.
You can't really tell at first, but the pattern repeats!

Look carefully. Look at the edges. Compare to Little Mermaid: Land. This is not only an illustration - it was painted in a way allowing to transform it into a pattern.

I know the classic story ,but I don't understand the order in which I'm supposed to look at these; they seem to be set out of sequence.  Same with the "Land" version you also posted.

Haha, it is a bit confusing! I'll see if I can help.

So, start with the image of the mermaid with her fish friends. "There once was a little mermaid who lived in the sea."
Then move clockwise to the image of her looking at her prince. "She was in love with a prince who lived on land."
And then to the image right below it. "So she made a deal with a sea witch to turn herself human."
Finally is the picture of the sea witch smirking. "At a price, of course."

Now look at the "Land" version, starting with the image of the mermaid washed up on shore. "She washed up on shore where she was found by the prince."
And now look left. "He took her in, but she found to her horror that she couldn't speak."
And then down. "And so she couldn't tell her prince that she was his mermaid love."
Finally, look at the image of the mermaid throwing herself into the sea. "In her despair, the little mermaid through herself into the sea and became sea foam."

And that's it! Hope that clears things up!
